Dad is a stylist! Coordinate your child’s clothes!

The clothes that children wear are often chosen by moms and dads.
But it is hard to think about what clothes to dress them in every day.

Therefore, in this issue.
Tips on how to choose the right clothes for your child.
We will also give you tips on how to enjoy the now popular link coordination with your family.

Know the function of the clothes and choose clothes that will make your child comfortable.

Knowing the function of clothing and how to choose it will help protect the health and safety of your child.
We therefore asked Yayoi Satsumoto, a professor in the Faculty of Education at Yokohama National University who has been studying the function of clothing for many years, about how to choose children’s clothing.

Understand the role of clothing!

 Clothing helps regulate body temperature.
Unlike adults, who always maintain a constant body temperature, children’s body temperature is affected by the temperature, rising when it is hot and falling when it is cold.
Therefore, do not just choose or change clothes based on the climate or temperature, but also observe the child and listen to his/her sensations of heat and cold to make a decision.

Children have a higher basal metabolism and higher thermogenic efficiency than adults, so their clothing requirements, especially in winter, are very different from those of adults.
Children are active and perspire even in winter, so if they are dressed too thickly to protect them from the cold, they may sweat when they move, and the heat cannot evaporate properly, upsetting the balance of body temperature regulation and causing a cold when the sweat cools later.
It is not too much insulation, and one layer thinner than an adult is fine.
A good rule of thumb might be to be aware that if Dad is a sweater, the child should wear a long-sleeved T-shirt made of a thicker fabric.
To take advantage of thermoregulation and to get the body to sweat better, be aware of allowing air to flow between the clothes and the body.
Since warm air has the tendency to escape upward, for example, choosing loose-fitting items such as large T-shirts and dresses in summer allows air to circulate between the clothes and the body, creating a comfortable environment inside the garment.

Also, take full advantage of the function of underwear.
Underwear absorbs not only sweat, but also dirt from the body, and it also plays an active role in hygiene.
Many people wonder if underwear is necessary in summer, but TPO is also relevant there.
For example, if you have a situation where you have a change of clothes and can change quickly after sweating, you may not need underwear.
On the other hand, if it is difficult to change clothes and the child must wear the same clothes all day, it is advisable to put on underwear.

However, there are times when it is not always correct to wear underwear, such as when a child is hot, so it should be handled according to the situation. Keep in mind that two pieces of fabric, no matter how thin, will be hotter than one, and make your decision based on the child’s condition.

Avoid injuries and accidents caused by clothing!

Children’s clothing should be chosen for safety as well as design and comfort.
For example, the cord may catch around the neck when trying to go down a slide and almost strangle the child, or the cord may catch on a swing and cause the child to fall.
In some cases, the fluttering skirt ignites when it gets close to the fire.
Be aware of what accidents can occur due to children’s clothing, and choose clothing that is safe.

Choose clothes with your child!

Parents may often decide what clothes their young children will wear alone, but it is also important to listen to their children’s opinions and ideas. We asked Yoko Igeta, president of the non-profit organization Kodomo no Mikata, who has written numerous books including “Raising Children as They Are,” for tips on communicating with children when choosing clothing.

Respect children’s “likes” and nurture a relationship of trust.

After the age of one, children begin to express emotions such as “no” and “no” so that adults can see their preferences.
When choosing clothes, many parents tend to view their children’s likes and dislikes as “selfishness” when what the parents want their children to wear differs from what the children want to wear. However, it is important for parents to respect their children’s preferences and be open and honest about their preferences in order to help them develop the ability to make their own choices.
This applies to many things, not just clothing choices.
It is impossible to build a trusting relationship with the child if things are done only according to the wishes of mom or dad.

When choosing clothing, it is advisable for adults to narrow down several candidates in advance based on the climate, TPO, and functionality of the clothing, and then ask, “Do you like this one or this one?” After narrowing down the choices based on the climate, TPO, and functionality of the clothing, it is best to communicate with them by giving them options such as, “Which do you like?
Gradually, you will learn about the child’s preferences and develop a better understanding of the child.
The child will then develop a belief (sense of self-competence and self-affirmation) that “Mom and Dad will listen to my ideas.
Understanding a child’s preferences will also help you when shopping for clothes with your child, and will also open the door to conversations such as, “These clothes are made with your favorite colors and characters.

Even if you do not usually choose clothes for your children, you should try to choose clothes with the mindset of using them as a material for creating communication with your children and realizing a trusting relationship with them.

Try a link coordinate that strengthens the bond between parent and child!

Linked coordination” is where moms and dads and their children wear the same items, colors, and patterns.
Many people may want to try the link coordination that has been gaining attention in recent years.
So, stylist and father of three, Yonosuke Kikuchi, will introduce some tips on how to create a link coordinate.

If choosing clothes is too complicated, start link-coding!

If you are not interested in clothes, you may find that many people find the idea of coordinating their own clothes too much of a hassle.
However, the greatest advantage of link coordination is that it eliminates the hassle of choosing the right clothes.

Linked coordination refers to matching clothing materials, colors, patterns, accessories, silhouettes, and many other aspects with a loved one, but it is an easy task if you do not see it as difficult and just “match the other person.
For example, if the partner wears a black denim skirt and the child chooses black denim, the dad will inevitably choose black denim as well, thus completing the link coordination.

I, too, often see my daughter wearing denim and choose, “Oh, I’ll wear denim, too, Dad,” and I think anyone can tackle this without stress because it reduces the amount of thinking about what to wear.
The appeal of link coordination is that it creates a sense of togetherness in the family through simple coordination by simply looking at what the family members are wearing and actively imitating them.
Also, when a child is reluctant to change clothes and will not change easily, “Hey, that denim is just like my dad’s! and high-five your child and show them how happy you are, they will be elated and change right away.

The linkage cord is eco-friendly!

Buying multiple pieces of clothing of the same design in different sizes is an eco-friendly way to save money and time.
Buying the same items for both siblings and dad will save time in choosing clothes, and also reduce the financial burden by allowing siblings to wear hand-me-downs.
Smaller clothes can also be recycled by putting them out to flea markets or second-hand clothing.
For those who have negative feelings about linkage coordination as being costly, troublesome, or a hurdle to overcome, we would like to tell them that linkage coordination is actually economical, time-efficient, and easy to dress up.

Frankly, some may feel embarrassed at first.
For those who do, we recommend starting with less visible areas such as socks and small items.
When children reach middle and high school age, their tastes and preferences become clear, and it becomes difficult to match their clothes due to rebelliousness.
Why not start with the feeling of casual enjoyment of link coordination, which is only possible now?

We found that clothing choices not only protect the health and safety of children, but also foster family communication and togetherness.
Choosing clothes in the busy morning hours can be a challenge, but it would be nice if parents and children could strengthen their bond through daily clothing selection while enjoying conversation with their children.
